"What you REALLY need."
DesignTide is an event that creates new opportunities for up and coming designers and manufacturers.

DesignTide aims to resonate in people's hearts by connecting designers, manufacturers, press, and buyers gathered from around the world for one week in Tokyo every autumn, helping creative work grow into businesses.
Outline of the event
■ Date : 31th October (wed) 〜4th November (sun), 2007
■ Area : Aoyama,Harajuku,Shibuya,Roppongi , Tokyo
■ Main Site: "An undisclosed building" in one of the areas listed above.
■ Extension Sites: 30-50 interior shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, and musuems in the areas listed above.
DesignTide in Tokyo 2007 Main Theme "Play"
「PLAY」
For this year's main theme, DesignTide came upon the word "PLAY", born out of the sheer air of excitement at last year's DT.
More than proposing new ideas,
more than pursuing style.
Something to get wild about,
something that's pure fun, that can't be explained by logic,
and something that awakens new emotions and energy in all of us.
Herein lies the next answer to our central question, "what we REALLY need".
We dream of everyone's "PLAY" descending onto the grounds of DesignTide this autumn in harmony,
to be enjoyed till your heart's content.
DesignTide in Tokyo 2007: Program

Tide Think:
Tide Think will feature designs from all kinds of creators, based on this year's main theme "PLAY". This project will bring forth new communication by allowing everyone to share their own unique form of "PLAY".
Tide Exhibition:
This is the main attraction of the main site, where designers, manufacturers, press, and buyers will gather from all over the world to create fertile ground for new opportunities and connections.
Up and coming designers and manufacturers in the fields of product design, interior design, and art from different countries will produce their own exhibit space. 53 designers from 11 countries participated last year, and we will follow this year with a Tide Exhibition overflowing with energy.
Photo >>
Tide 'Super' Market:
Designers will set up shop at Tide Market, offering you the chance to talk about the work with the designers themselves. These memorable encounters transform material objects into objects of affection that enrich your daily life. 30 groups participated last year. Acting as the main site's museum shop, Tide Market will open its doors once more with even more momentum.
Photo >>
Tide Extension:
Works will be displayed in shops, galleries, and cafes in the Aoyama, Harajuku, Roppongi areas. Designers and shops will produce their own installations, filling the town with new possibilities and discoveries of design.
Photo >>
Party & Event:
Something exciting is always going on at DesignTide: events that feature designers, workshops open to the public, and a selection of parties every night, with designers from around the world and professionals from various fields.

2006 report vol.3 ! -Tide Market-
'Tide Market'. A market ran by the designers themselves.

↑Around twenty stands in the all Tide market where visitors were able to meet the designers personally and buy exclusive products as a souvenir.

↑(left) "Shikisai" is a T-shirt brand launched by the designer duo Noto-Fusai that explores the possibilities of T-shirt design using only white T-shirts and black prints. They use familiar motifs such as blind curtains, plugs and sneakers, and giving pleasant surprises to those who wear them or see them worn.
↑(right)Sweet stuffed- toys by Nicole Noack, designer based in Hamburg and introduced for the first time in Japan. We probably feel attached to them because they are made of familiar material "socks". Each piece has its own unique character since they are all handmade.
↑ "HARVEST" accessories are made from broken or old skateboard decks. This cute brooch with a flower and a heart is also made from a deck. These are the art accessories of skateboards beyond skating.

↑col*or alias Rodja & Colin. During Tide Market Rodia & Colin asked the visitors to pick up a T-shirt and print their favorite graphics on it. Was the stand supposed to be an hospital?!
↑(left)Asao Tokolo focuses on creating patterns in the fields of art, architecture, design. He has worked on the projects theme "to connect". This magnet which looks like pieces of a puzzle is the outcome of his attempt to create a new Japanese arabesque pattern.
↑(right)A wirst watch brand NOOKA, launched by the artist/designer Matthew Waldman. On the picture he's wearing one of the New Collection's watches he designed especially for DesignTide! He was the best seller in Tide Market! Congratulations!

↑Treasured trash exhibition

↑From the street you can see the message "See you again", written on the bags. This saying is inspired by garbage to be used after acts of consumption. Abandonment is never the last parting. The bags are distributed by GAS AS INTERFACE.

↑"Tide Chandelier" by Stuart Haygarth. He started his current design project two years ago, collecting all kinds of refuse and using this to recreate something new so giving these items a new life and a new meaning.
↑Pictogram designed by Kazuhiro Yamamoto (Donny Grafiks). He wants to create the new standard pictogram for the teash / resource box.

↑"Ofuruyama / mountain of used clothes " by Chie Morimoto + Yuta Iguchi featuring Nana Ishikawa. Countless articles of used clothing piled up. One by one, life is gradually breathed into them. The used clothes (= ofuru) become monkeys (= osaru).

2006 report vol.1 ! -Tide Exhibition-
"Design" & PEACE was the theme of the main exhibition site. In the first report, we invite you to discover the designers' "... & Peace" messages!

↑Max Lamb graduated from RCA in London. Inspired by sea and nature, he likes to mix traditional and contemporary technology. The process of making things is very important for him that's why he always shows both: furniture and process. His message: Make & PEACE!
↑→ Gen Suzuki also graduated from RCA in London.
Those are the designer's personal creation for sharing the daily emotional feelings and discoveries with his family and friends. Love & PEACE!

↑Shadow Monsters is an intuitive and magical experience for both young and old alike to play with body posture to create crazy narratives by Philip Worthington. The character appears from the participants, that each creates a rich environment. Play & PEACE!

↑Graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in Holland, the five designers worked together for this exhibition.

↑Alternative wooden bricks made by Dainippon Type Organization who loves to play with letters. It is quite surprising to see Chinese characters and English words of the same meaning appear when designated parts are assembled together. A toy for imagination and creativity. Piece & PEACE !

↑MIDORIARAKI @ MAXRAY - "LIVING with PAHNTOM".
When switched on the light, it creates a sens of relief with the warm lighting and at the same time a false illusion by the shadow. Phantom or ghost loomed out on the ceiling catches your attention and makes you feel both pleasing and scared.
→"We wanted to change our observing points and tried wall-climbing training, which really changed our ways of looking at the townscape." On Wall was created by such an experience of the designers actually hanging on the wall. Figures of creatures on wall, are something you feel like touching. Can it be a part of the interior? Be functional? Be used as lighting? Here are the three designed walls.

↑Temple table, stool was inspired by the temples, woodcraft technique and traditional handicrafts Piet Hein Eek saw while visiting Japan. It is made without any metal binding
